CHICOPEE, MA — A 17-year-old Springfield juvenile faces multiple charges after crashing a stolen vehicle and discarding a firearm during a foot chase Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were alerted to a stolen car entering the city on East Street in the area of Carew Street at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Feb. 3, 2026.

An officer monitoring traffic observed the vehicle traveling north on East Street approaching the intersection of East Main Street.

As the vehicle crossed over the Deady Bridge, the operator realized the vehicle behind him was an unmarked police cruiser and quickly changed lanes, turning onto Montgomery Street.

The officer had not activated his blue lights as he was waiting for more cruisers to respond to his location to prevent the vehicle from fleeing.

The vehicle then took an abrupt right turn onto Jennings Street headed back toward Memorial Drive.

As the suspect vehicle approached the end of Jennings Street, it turned right onto Memorial Drive and became stuck in traffic at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Sheridan Street.

The officer exited his cruiser and began approaching the suspect vehicle, yelling for the operator to get out of the vehicle.

The operator accelerated and attempted to split traffic, hitting four vehicles that were stopped at the red light.

The operator and two passengers immediately jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The officer took the driver into custody after a brief foot chase while other responding officers located the other two passengers.

Once the operator was in custody, it was determined he had attempted to hide a firearm in the snow as he attempted to jump over a fence.

The firearm had an extended magazine with 15 rounds of ammunition and the serial number had been removed.

The 17-year-old Springfield juvenile was charged with receiving stolen motor vehicle, fail to stop for police, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leave the scene of personal injury crash, leave the scene of property damage crash (two counts), marked lanes violation, resisting arrest, possess large capacity firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, defaced firearm and possess firearm in a felony.

Lionel Alsina, 18, of Springfield, was arrested and charged with receiving stolen motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
