Bus crashes on Interstate 87 in Lewis

LEWIS, NY — New York State Police responded to a property damage motor vehicle collision on Interstate 87 northbound in the town of Lewis on Feb. 3, 2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m. involving an Adirondack Trailways bus.

An investigation determined that a 2019 Adirondack Trailways bus, operated by Leon W. Wells, 39, of Jamaica, was traveling northbound on I-87 when the operator lost control of the vehicle and struck a guiderail on the west shoulder.

Wells then overcorrected, causing the bus to leave the roadway on the east shoulder and come to rest in a ditch.

There were five passengers on the bus in addition to the operator.

No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

Wells was issued a vehicle and traffic ticket, returnable to the Town of Lewis Court on a later date.
