BOSTON, MA — Two suspects were arrested early Sunday following a traffic stop that led to the recovery of a loaded firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) observed a motor vehicle failing to stop for a red light at the intersection of Bowdoin Street and Washington Street at about 12 a.m.
Officers conducted a traffic stop at 35 Harvard Street.
As the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger door opened and a suspect fled on foot.
Two officers pursued the suspect while two others remained with the vehicle.
Officers observed the suspect slip and fall as he tried to jump between vehicles, and he was quickly handcuffed.
Officers conducted an exit order of the remaining two occupants.
A pat frisk was conducted and a firearm was recovered from the waistband of one of the suspects.
District detectives responded to the scene and determined the firearm to be a Smith & Wesson SD40VE with an obliterated serial number and nine rounds in the magazine.
Officers determined that the operator of the motor vehicle had a suspended license.
Tyler Powell, 18, of Dorchester, was arrested and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a large capacity firearm and defacement of a firearm serial number.
