BRANFORD, CT — A two-family home was declared uninhabitable after a fire broke out on the rear porch and spread to both floors Tuesday night.
The Branford Fire Department responded to 51 Silver Street at approximately 8:58 p.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the rear porch of the structure, with flames extending into both the first and second floors of the home.
Crews immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while simultaneously conducting a primary search of the residence.
The fire was brought under control within approximately one hour.
Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to ensure complete extinguishment and to address any remaining hot spots.
The two-family dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire.
Neighbors are credited with evacuating the second-floor occupant prior to the arrival of the Fire Department.
No injuries were reported to residents or firefighters.
Firefighters operated under bitter cold temperatures and icy conditions throughout suppression efforts.
All responding units were cleared from the scene by approximately 11:30 p.m.
First Selectman Josh Brooks worked in coordination with Branford Counseling and Community Services to assist displaced residents with temporary shelter.
The American Red Cross also responded to provide assistance.
Responding units included Branford Engines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 9; Ladder Truck 1; Car units 1, 2, 8, and 9; Medic 3; and Ambulance 2.
The Guilford Fire Department provided on-scene mutual aid, while the East Haven Fire Department covered Branford fire stations during the incident.
The Branford Police Department provided traffic control and scene safety.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
