Springfield police arrest shooting suspect on State Street

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A 19-year-old Springfield man was arrested Thursday morning on State Street in connection with a July shooting that damaged both a vehicle and a home.

Police said Jahmir Appoletio was taken into custody at about 11:50 a.m. by members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Firearms Investigation Unit Warrant Apprehension Unit, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

The arrest followed an investigation into a reported shooting on July 2 around 11:45 p.m. in the area of Marion Street and McKnight Street.

Officers responded to two ShotSpotter activations and found evidence and vehicle damage on Marion Street, as well as gunfire damage to a home on Girard Avenue.

Detectives recovered a suspect vehicle and secured an arrest warrant for Appoletio following the investigation.

Appoletio, of Springfield, faces charges including discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a firearm without an FID card, possession of ammunition without an FID card, two counts of malicious destruction of property valued less than $1200 and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Appoletio was apprehended on the 600 block of State Street and is being held pending arraignment.
