Snowmobile operator dies after crash in Victory

VICTORY, NY — A snowmobile operator died after crashing into a town snowplow on Jan. 27, 2026.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:39 p.m. on Ira Station Road in Cayuga County.

A 2022 Lynx snowmobile operated by a 49-year-old man was traveling westbound on a designated snowmobile trail that crosses Ira Station Road.

The trail is marked with stop signs on both sides of the roadway.

Preliminary investigation indicates the snowmobile did not stop before entering the roadway, crossed the northbound lane and struck the plow blade of a southbound Town of Victory highway snowplow.

Following the initial impact, the snowmobile continued forward and struck a wooden utility pole with an attached electrical box.

The snowmobile subsequently caught fire.

The operator was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where life-saving measures were attempted.

He was later pronounced deceased.

The snowplow, a 2019 International Harvester, was operated by a 45-year-old man.

The operator was cooperative and showed no signs of impairment.

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded and processed the scene.

New York State Police in SP Auburn are investigating the crash.
