Man arrested on rape charges in Hartwick

HARTWICK, NY — A 49-year-old man has been arrested following an investigation into a sexual assault.

Kunga Gyamtso, of Hartwick, was arrested Jan. 29, 2026, and charged with rape in the first degree and criminal sex act in the first degree.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation revealed Gyamtso subjected a female victim to unwanted forcible sexual acts at his residence in the Town of Hartwick.

Evidence was presented to the Otsego County Grand Jury, which handed down an indictment.

Gyamtso was located at his residence Jan. 29, 2026, and taken into custody.

Following arrest processing, he was arraigned in Otsego County Court and remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $40,000 cash bail, $40,000 credit card or $400,000 partially secured surety bond.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Vestal Police Department during the investigation.
