Police warn of bank scams targeting seniors in Endicott

ENDICOTT, NY — The Endicott Police Department is warning residents of an increase in scams targeting older adults by falsely claiming there are problems with their bank accounts.

Scammers may call, text, email or send pop-up messages on computers while pretending to be a bank or financial institution.

They often create a sense of urgency and pressure victims to act immediately by providing personal information or moving money.

Police say banks will never ask for a PIN, password or one-time verification codes.

Residents should not send money, gift cards or transfer funds at someone else’s request.

Scammers may already have access to accounts and know exactly how much money is in them, police said.

Police advise residents to hang up and contact their bank directly using the phone number on their bank card or statement.

Residents should talk with a trusted friend or family member before taking action.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call or message should not engage and should report it immediately to their bank and local law enforcement.
