Snowmobile crash kills man in Portage

PORTAGE, NY — A 25-year-old man died after crashing his snowmobile into a barn, authorities said.

Adam Curry, of Portage, was reported missing on Jan. 25 at approximately 4:45 p.m. after he had not been seen or heard from in over 12 hours, according to Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty.

Curry was last seen operating his snowmobile through local trails and fields.

While deputies were investigating the missing person report, Livingston County dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a snowmobile had crashed into a barn on Smith Road in the Town of Portage.

Sheriff’s deputies and the Nunda Police Department arrived on scene and confirmed the individual was deceased.

The deceased was identified as Curry, who had been reported missing hours earlier.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Curry failed to negotiate a turn while operating his snowmobile through a field on Smith Road in the early morning hours of Jan. 25.

The investigation into the snowmobile crash is ongoing.

Investigating for the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office were members of the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division and Forensic Identification Unit.

Assisting at the scene was the Nunda Police Department, Livingston County ALS, Nunda Ambulance, Nunda Fire Department, New York State Park Police and the Livingston County Coroner’s Office.
