Two arrested on drug trafficking charges in Shrewsbury

SHREWSBURY, MA — Two people were arrested on drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop on Boston Turnpike on Jan. 21, 2026.

Detective Vieira observed a green Toyota RAV4 fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Boston Turnpike and Lakeview Avenue at approximately 10:37 a.m., according to the Shrewsbury Police Department.

The detective conducted a traffic stop on Route 9 westbound just prior to the Lake Quinsigamond bridge.

Based on a roadside investigation, Detective Vieira developed probable cause to believe there were drugs inside the vehicle.

The two occupants were asked to step out of the vehicle, and a search was conducted of both parties and the vehicle.

The search led to the discovery of over 18 grams of fentanyl and over 34 grams of crack cocaine, along with four separate cell phones inside the vehicle.

Officers seized $888 from the defendant under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 94C, Section 47, which authorizes seizures of money directly associated with drug distribution.

The operator was identified as Sergio Hernandez, 43, of Auburn.

Hernandez is charged with trafficking fentanyl, trafficking crack cocaine, conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws and a stop sign violation.

The passenger was identified as Alexandra Rivera, 44, of Worcester.

Rivera is charged with trafficking fentanyl, trafficking crack cocaine, conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws and a seatbelt violation.

Officers Carroll, Samuel and Sgt. Sklut assisted with the arrest.
