Man arrested on firearm charges in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A Springfield man faces multiple charges after police seized a loaded large-capacity firearm during a traffic stop Tuesday night.

Willie Woods Jr., 31, of Springfield, was arrested at approximately 8:25 p.m. on Jan. 20 following a disturbance call on Marion Street.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Marion Street around 8 p.m. for a report of a disturbance involving a firearm.

As officers arrived, a suspect vehicle was leaving the scene and did not stop when officers attempted to flag it down.

Officers re-entered their cruiser and conducted a traffic stop on the 100 block of Marion Street.

The vehicle was occupied by Woods and an adult female passenger who was later released.

Woods initially complied with officers but then attempted to run away, according to police.

Woods kicked an officer as he was being taken into custody, police said.

Officers recovered a large-capacity firearm in Woods’ pocket that was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

Woods is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded high-capacity firearm without a license, possession of a high-capacity firearm, and assault and battery on a police officer.
