AUBURN, MA — Police are investigating reports of a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to represent the Auburn Police Department and request donations.
At least one Auburn resident has been contacted by the scammer, according to police.
The Auburn Police Department said it is not placing these phone calls.
Officers are actively investigating the source of the calls.
Police advised residents not to provide personal or financial information over the phone.
Residents should be cautious of callers who pressure them to act immediately, police said.
Police warned that caller ID numbers can be spoofed and should not be trusted alone.
Residents who receive suspicious calls should hang up and contact the organization directly using a verified phone number, according to police.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to notify the Auburn Police Department.
