Scam alert issued in Ontario County

1 min read

CANANDAIGUA, NY — Several Ontario County residents have reported being targeted by a phone scam involving someone impersonating a sheriff’s deputy.

A subject claiming to be an Ontario County Sheriff’s Office deputy is contacting people by phone requesting cash, credit card information or Venmo payments to cover a family member’s bail, according to Sheriff David Cirencione.

The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for or demand payment over the phone or use such tactics, Cirencione said.

The Ontario County Court and other courts also do not use such methods, he said.

Anyone who receives such a call should not provide any personal information or make any payments, according to the sheriff.

Residents should hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 585-394-4560 to verify questions or concerns.
