ROCKLAND, ME — Police have arrested a school bus driver on a manslaughter charge in connection with a fatal incident that killed a student in November.
Jeffery Colburn, 65, of Camden, was arrested Wednesday following a grand jury indictment and warrant issued by the Knox County District Attorney’s Office.
Colburn was the school bus driver involved in the fatal incident that occurred on Nov. 21 that resulted in the death of a student.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Broadway at the intersection of Eliza Steele Drive when an RSU 13 student was struck by a school bus.
The child was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and airlifted to Maine Medical Center, where the student died.
Since the incident, Rockland Police, including the department’s Criminal Investigation Division, have worked with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office on the investigation.
The investigation included interviews of numerous witnesses, legal process and review of relevant records, consultation with subject matter experts and assistance from the Maine State Police, Bureau of Highway Safety, Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Maine Health & Environmental Testing Laboratory, Bureau of Motor Vehicles and RSU-13.
Colburn was charged with manslaughter, a Class A felony.
