CHAZY, NY — Two juveniles were injured, one critically, when a dirt bike was struck by a vehicle on State Route 9 on Jan. 13.
New York State Police responded to the scene at approximately 5:55 p.m. for a reported vehicle versus dirt bike collision involving serious personal injury.
An investigation determined that a mini gas-operated dirt bike, operated by a 14-year-old male with a 13-year-old male passenger, both from Chazy, was traveling south on State Route 9 in the middle of the roadway with no lights equipped on the bike.
A tan 1998 Buick La Sabre, operated by Hannah R. Bessette, 23, of Chazy, was also traveling south on State Route 9 when she failed to observe the dirt bike and struck it from the rear.
Both juveniles were ejected from the dirt bike and sustained injuries.
Bessette was not injured.
The 14-year-old male sustained minor injuries, and the 13-year-old male sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently listed in critical condition.
Both were transported to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for medical treatment.
Further investigation determined there were no signs of impairment, and no criminal activity was identified on the part of Bessette.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene.
New York State Police were assisted at the scene by Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, Chazy EMS, CVPH EMS, Champlain EMS, Chazy Fire Department, Champlain Fire Department, and West Chazy Fire Department.
