Drugs, firearm seized in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A months-long investigation into drug distribution led to the seizure of trafficking amounts of cocaine and fentanyl and an illegal firearm Friday evening.

Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit executed a search warrant at an apartment on the 200 block of Fernbank Road at approximately 6:50 p.m. Jan. 9.

Detectives had been investigating the illegal distribution of crack-cocaine around the area of the Eastbrook Apartments for several months.

During the search, detectives recovered approximately 99.3 grams of cocaine and crack-cocaine, 68.4 grams of suspected heroin and fentanyl, $1,680 in cash, an illegal large capacity firearm and loose ammunition.

The suspected heroin and fentanyl totaled 3,420 bags.

Gilberto Flores Jr., 42, of Springfield, was arrested at the scene.

Flores is charged with possession of a firearm without an FID card, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a large capacity firearm during the commission of a felony, improper storage of a large capacity firearm near a minor, cocaine trafficking 36-100 grams, fentanyl trafficking more than 10 grams and heroin trafficking 36-100 grams.
