Police impersonator reports investigated in Readington Township

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — Police are investigating reports of an individual impersonating a police officer and directing motorists to stop.

The Readington Township Police Department said suspicious incidents have been reported in neighboring jurisdictions involving someone operating an unmarked vehicle while posing as an officer.

Police said they have received information indicating a similar incident may have occurred in Readington Township.

The reports are currently under investigation.

Police are advising motorists who are being stopped and are unsure whether the individual is a legitimate police officer to remain in their vehicle and slow down.

Motorists should activate their hazard lights to acknowledge the stop and call 9-1-1 immediately to advise the dispatcher of their location and the situation.

Police said motorists should follow the dispatcher’s instructions and a marked police unit can be sent to their location to verify the stop.

Anyone who believes they have been contacted by a police impersonator is urged to report the incident immediately to the Readington Township Police Department.
