Two arrested after handgun dispute in Clayton

CLAYTON, NJ — Two people were taken into custody following reports of a dispute involving a handgun on the afternoon of Jan. 8, 2026, according to the Clayton Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South Delsea Drive after receiving reports of a male subject displaying a handgun during a dispute.

Officers secured the scene upon arrival and identified the individuals involved.

Herma Simmons Elementary School was placed on a temporary lockdown as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The two individuals were taken into custody without further incident.

The lockdown at Herma Simmons Elementary School was lifted after officers conducted a thorough sweep of the area and determined there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The Glassboro Police Department, Elk Township Police Department, Franklin Township Police Department and Monroe Township Police Department assisted in the response.
