Woman arrested on welfare fraud charges in Olean

OLEAN, NY — A woman was arrested on welfare fraud charges following an investigation by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.

Valerie M. Miles, of Scio, was arrested on a warrant at 10 a.m. Jan. 6 at the Cattaraugus County Jail, where she was already being held on unrelated charges.

Miles was charged with forgery in the second degree, a felony, and offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, a felony.

The charges stem from an investigation into a complaint filed in 2022 by the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services.

Authorities allege Miles forged paperwork and submitted it to the department for her SNAP case.

The warrant for her arrest was issued June 10, 2025.

Miles was transported to Olean City Court for arraignment and was remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $1 bail.

She is scheduled to appear in Olean City Court at a later date.
