TROY, NY — Scammers are calling residents in the Troy area while impersonating investigators from the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, according to authorities.
The callers are using a spoofed phone number that appears to be the Sheriff’s Office’s actual number, 518-270-5448, officials said.
The scammers claim the person being called has an active warrant and demand money or personal information.
The Sheriff’s Office said it never calls to demand money or personal information regarding warrants.
Authorities are advising residents who receive such calls to hang up immediately and not provide any money, gift cards or personal details.
Officials said warrants can only be cleared through official channels, not through phone calls.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to share the warning with neighbors and family members.
