1 min read

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A reported gas theft earlier this month led to charges following a traffic stop in Lakewood.

On Jan. 2, officers responded to a report of a driver who pumped approximately $20 worth of gasoline at a local gas station and left without paying, claiming he would return with the money.

The individual never returned.

The employee provided police with a receipt and an image of the suspect vehicle, which was documented as part of the investigation that was handled by Patrolman Fink.

On Jan. 3, while on patrol in the area of River Avenue and Cross Street, Patrolman D’Angelo located the suspect vehicle.

A traffic stop was conducted, and the registered owner was found to have an outstanding warrant and was taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed the individual was also connected to the earlier gas theft.

He was identified as Robert F. Nelson Jr., 60, of Toms River.

Nelson was charged with theft of services under $200 and issued a complaint summons.
