Three arrested on weapons charges in Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, NY — State Police arrested three Vermont men on weapons and drug charges following a traffic stop on Interstate 87 on Dec. 22.

Abdullahi N. Awayle, 27, of Burlington, Abdihakim Dayo, 21, of Burlington, and an 18-year-old were each charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor.

Awayle was also charged with a vehicle and traffic law violation.

Troopers assigned to the Troop G Community Stabilization Unit stopped a vehicle on the I-87 Thruway in Bethlehem at about 11:08 a.m. for a traffic and vehicle law violation.

Awayle was identified as the driver, with Dayo and the 18-year-old as passengers.

During the investigation, with assistance from State Police K9 J, two illegally possessed loaded handguns and a controlled substance were discovered and seized from the vehicle.

All three were arrested at the scene and transported to State Police Latham for processing.

Awayle, Dayo and the 18-year-old were arraigned at Bethlehem Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
