BOLTON, VT — A 62-year-old woman died Thursday after a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 northbound.
Vermont State Police said troopers from the Williston barracks responded to a report of a crash with minor injuries near mile marker 73 at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Dec. 26.
An investigation determined that Nelson E. Caraballo, 61, of Somerville, was driving a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek northbound when he swerved to avoid a tractor-trailer unit that was making a lane change.
The vehicle lost control and went into the median, where it struck a tree, police said.
Caraballo and his passenger, Janet F. Montgomery, 62, of Somerville, Massachusetts, were transported to UVM Medical Center for treatment of suspected minor injuries.
Montgomery later died at the hospital from previously unknown injuries sustained in the crash.
Road conditions were clear with occasional drifting snow and overcast skies at the time of the crash.
The Crosstrek sustained front-end damage.
The investigation is ongoing.
