Police investigate murder-suicide in Tremont

TREMONT, ME — Maine State Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that left a husband and wife dead at a residence on Big Rocks Road.

On Tuesday, Dec. 23, at approximately 8:57 a.m., Southwest Harbor Police responded to a 911 call reporting two deceased adults at the scene.

Members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North responded and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths in coordination with Southwest Harbor Police.

Members of the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team were dispatched to the scene and worked to process available evidence.

The deceased were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation led investigators to identify the deceased as Jyoti Hawley, 78, of Tremont, and William Hawley, 75, of Tremont.

Jyoti and William Hawley were husband and wife.

On Friday, Dec. 26, autopsies were performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where the cause of death was determined to be gunshot wounds for both individuals.

The manner of death for Jyoti Hawley was ruled a homicide.

The manner of death for William Hawley was ruled a suicide.

Maine State Police have identified all involved parties and believe this is an isolated incident with no ongoing public safety concerns.
