BLOOMINGDALE, NJ — Police discovered a live World War II-era hand grenade in a backyard on Walter Drive on Tuesday.
A resident found the device and contacted the Bloomingdale Police Department.
Officers determined the object appeared to be a real hand grenade and evacuated nearby homes.
Walter T. Bergen School was placed into shelter-in-place status.
The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad examined the device and confirmed it was a live, fully charged grenade.
The bomb squad safely removed the grenade without incident.
A search of the residence and surrounding area with assistance from the sheriff’s office bomb squad and K-9 division found no additional devices.
Police believe the grenade was left behind by a deceased World War II veteran who previously lived at the residence.
The Bloomingdale Fire Department, Bloomingdale Department of Works, Triboro First Aid Squad and Passaic County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the response.
