BOLTON, VT — A 21-year-old woman died Wednesday evening following a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver on Interstate 89 South.
Vermont State Police responded to reports of a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lane near mile marker 71 at approximately 5:22 p.m. Dec. 17.
Dispatchers received reports of a multi-vehicle crash as troopers were responding to the scene.
Investigation revealed a 2022 Toyota Tundra operated by Timothy Wooster, 45, of Jericho, was traveling northbound when it crossed the median into the southbound lane near mile marker 72.6.
The Tundra continued driving north in the southbound lane until colliding head-on with a 2018 Kia Sportage operated by Hailey Westcot, 21, of Northfield.
A 2024 Freightliner Cascadia operated by Douglas Bailey, 50, of Londonderry, N.H., was traveling southbound in the travel lane when the head-on collision occurred ahead, and the Freightliner collided with the Kia, causing a rollover and further damage.
Westcot was pronounced deceased at the scene and subsequently transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington.
Wooster was transported to University of Vermont Medical Center to be treated for serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Bailey was evaluated on scene and did not report any injuries.
Both the Tundra and Kia were totaled in the crash.
Wooster was cited on a charge of Grossly Negligent Operation with Death Resulting.
Further charges will be determined upon continued investigation.
The Vermont State Police was assisted by Williston Police Department, DMV Enforcement & Safety, the Williston Fire Department, Waterbury Ambulance, Bolton Rescue, and Richmond Fire & Rescue.
