Scam callers pose as sheriff’s deputies in Cayuga County

1 min read

AUBURN, NY — The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers posing as law enforcement officials to defraud victims.

The agency received multiple reports Monday of individuals calling members of the public and identifying themselves as representatives of the “Sheriff’s Office” or “Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.”

The callers tell potential victims they have outstanding warrants, judgments or fines that need to be immediately addressed.

The scammers ask victims to purchase gift cards from a local pharmacy and provide information from the cards to satisfy a warrant, judgment or other fine.

They also may seek payment by wire or other means.

The Sheriff’s Office does not solicit money or gift card numbers over the telephone for any reason.

Officials are urging anyone who receives a similar call to disconnect without responding or taking action.
