HEMPSTEAD, NY — A Jamaica man faces vehicular manslaughter charges after a fatal crash on the Southern State Parkway early Saturday morning.
New York State Police responded to the westbound parkway near exit 13 at approximately 4 a.m. for reports of a single-vehicle crash.
Troopers found a Hyundai Sonata on the right shoulder that had struck a tree.
The driver, Deodat J. Ramotar, 35, of Jamaica, and the front seat passenger were uninjured.
Two of the three rear seat passengers were transported to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
One rear seat passenger died at the scene.
Police said Ramotar lost control of the vehicle while traveling at a speed too fast for conditions and was intoxicated.
Ramotar is charged with driving while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter-operate motor vehicle impaired causing death, vehicular manslaughter-recklessly causing death, two counts of third-degree assault, second-degree assault-recklessly causing serious physical injury, second-degree reckless endangerment and various vehicle and traffic law violations.
He was processed and transported to Nassau County Detention Center.
