Man shot during road-rage incident in Wawayanda

WAWAYANDA, NY — A Middletown man was shot by an off-duty police officer during a road-rage confrontation on Dec. 11.

Troopers from the New York State Police Middletown barracks responded to a reported shooting on Dolsontown Road near the intersection of McVeigh Road at approximately 3:45 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2020 Volkswagen and a 2021 Toyota pickup truck were involved in a road-rage incident that spanned approximately one mile along Dolsontown Road.

The confrontation escalated when the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as Wallace F. Fisher, 31, of Middletown, exited his vehicle and approached the driver of the Toyota.

A verbal altercation occurred at the driver’s side window of the Toyota and subsequently turned physical, with Fisher brandishing a knife.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as Anthony Simon, 33, an off-duty Kingston Police officer, discharged his firearm, striking Fisher.

Fisher was initially transported to Garnet Health Medical Center but was ultimately transferred to Westchester Medical Center where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The State Police was assisted by City of Middletown Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville Township Volunteer Ambulance and Wawayanda EMS.

The investigation remains ongoing.
