Pedestrian struck by bus in Penn Yan

PENN YAN, NY — A 79-year-old woman was struck by a bus and airlifted to a hospital Tuesday morning at the intersection of Liberty Street and Elm Street.

Police responded to the accident at 11:19 a.m.

Officers found citizens tending to Judy Thompson, 79, of Penn Yan, who was lying in the roadway.

Penn Yan Fire and Penn Yan Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to provide assistance.

Thompson was treated by EMS and transferred to LifeNet, where she was transported by helicopter for further hospital treatment.

Police identified Robert Gilbert, 79, of Penn Yan, as the bus driver.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Gilbert was turning north onto Liberty Street from Elm Street and struck Thompson, who was crossing Liberty Street westbound.

Police continue to investigate the incident and charges may be pending.
