Man arrested after fleeing traffic stop in Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, NY — A traffic stop for a stolen license plate led to a pursuit and multiple arrests after a driver fled from state police and struck three patrol vehicles on Dec. 9.

Troopers from the State Police Hawthorne barracks initiated the traffic stop at approximately 8:56 p.m. in the area of mile marker 6.0 on the Sprain Brook Parkway.

The stop was made after Westchester County Real Time Crime broadcasted information about a stolen plate on a 2020 Maxima.

The vehicle initially stopped but then fled the scene, continuing southbound on the parkway.

The Maxima struck three Westchester County patrol vehicles before coming to rest.

The driver, George Evangelista, 54, of Bronx, New York, fled on foot and was quickly taken into custody by officers on scene.

Evangelista was transported to a local medical facility for non-life-threatening injuries.

He was released to State Police and charged with reckless endangerment 2nd degree, three counts of criminal mischief: reckless property damage greater than $250, criminal possession of stolen property 5th degree, obstruct governmental administration 2nd: prevent official function, and unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle 3rd degree, all class A misdemeanors.

Evangelista also faces multiple New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

He was turned over to the New York Police Department for an active warrant.
