Driver arrested on DUI charge in Rutland Town

RUTLAND TOWN, VT — Vermont State Police arrested a motorist on suspicion of driving under the influence following a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning.

Matthew McCollum, 48, of West Pawlet, was taken into custody at 12:08 a.m. after his vehicle left the roadway on U.S. Route 4 near U.S. Route 7.

Police said McCollum failed to maintain his lane and exited the highway via the north shoulder while driving a 2003 Subaru Forester.

The crash occurred during snowy conditions with snow-covered roads.

Troopers detected signs of impairment while speaking with McCollum at the scene.

McCollum was transported to the Rutland Barracks for processing.

He was issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court Rutland Criminal Division on Dec. 29 at 10 a.m.

McCollum was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

No injuries were reported, and the vehicle sustained minor damage.
