NEW HARTFORD, NY — Two Syracuse teenagers were arrested early Tuesday morning in connection with a burglary at a local smoke shop after a pursuit that began in New York Mills.
New Hartford police responded at approximately 4 a.m. to assist New York Mills police with a vehicle that failed to stop after officers observed a traffic violation on Commercial Drive in the Village of New York Mills.
The vehicle’s operator failed to comply with officers and continued driving before becoming involved in a minor collision.
Both occupants, ages 16 and 17, fled on foot and were apprehended in New York Mills.
Police discovered the vehicle had been stolen from Syracuse.
Officers observed what appeared to be evidence of a recent burglary inside the vehicle.
Police determined there had been a break-in at the One Stop Smoke Shop on Commercial Drive in the Town of New Hartford.
Officers observed signs of forced entry at the business and confirmed merchandise had been stolen.
New Hartford Police Crime Scene Unit Evidence Technicians processed the scene.
New Hartford police charged both teenagers with third-degree burglary, a felony, and petit larceny, a misdemeanor.
New York Mills police charged the teenagers with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor; fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor; third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, a misdemeanor; and vehicle and traffic law violations.
Both teenagers were transported to Oneida County Family Court for arraignment.
One juvenile was turned over to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office after arraignment on an outstanding warrant issued by Onondaga County Family Court.
The other juvenile was transported to the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center in Syracuse as a repeat offender.
New York Mills police, New Hartford police, Yorkville police, Whitestown police and Oneida County sheriff’s deputies assisted in the apprehension.
