UTICA, NY — Two men face multiple charges following a traffic stop that led to a brief pursuit on Dec. 9.
Utica Police units assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit, partnered with patrol units, conducted a motor vehicle stop at the Kennedy Plaza apartment complex at approximately 7:15 p.m. for vehicle and traffic law violations.
The vehicle initially pulled to the side of the road, but when officers approached, they heard someone inside tell the driver to flee.
Another vehicle blocked the suspect vehicle’s escape route, but after a few moments the driver rammed the uninvolved vehicle, pushing it out of the way, and fled the scene.
Officers pursued the vehicle, which came to a stop in a parking lot off Lafayette Street.
The occupants exited and attempted to flee on foot.
Officers detained one male who ran from the vehicle and during a pat frisk located a loaded .40 caliber handgun in his pants.
A search of his person also yielded felony-level narcotics.
The male was identified as Yusef Mudey, 19, of Utica.
Officers attempted to detain the other two occupants and noticed one male was wanted for felony drug possession.
Those charges stemmed from a motor vehicle accident on Dec. 1 in which the suspect fled and discarded felony-level narcotics.
The suspect, identified as Trimard Campbell, 26, of Utica, was initially not compliant with officers but was detained and placed in handcuffs.
The driver, Demarcus Davis, 27, of Utica, was issued 14 traffic tickets and released.
Mudey was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.
Campbell was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest.
