LINCOLN, RI — The Lincoln Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam targeting the community.
Police said scammers are calling individuals while pretending to be “Sergeant Palmer” from a local law enforcement agency.
The callers claim victims have missed jury duty, owe fines or need to verify personal information, according to police.
Police said the scammers use fear and urgency to pressure victims into giving out personal details or making immediate payments over the phone.
No legitimate law enforcement agency will demand money, personal information or signature verification over the phone, police said.
Police are advising residents who receive a suspicious call and are unsure of its legitimacy to hang up and contact their local police department, court or sheriff’s office using their official phone number.
Residents should never share personal or banking information over the phone, never make payments to unknown callers and always verify before acting, police said.
