SPRINGFIELD, MA — Two men were arrested Tuesday night following a shooting investigation that left a juvenile male with non-life-threatening injuries.
Springfield Police Officers responded to the area of Main and Union streets at approximately 4 p.m. for a report of a gunshot victim.
Officers located a juvenile male victim on the 100 block of William Street.
He was transported to Baystate and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident is alleged to have started with a fight, and the shooting is believed to have occurred near the intersection of Main Street and Winthrop Street.
Officers received information that individuals fled the scene and ran into a home on the 0-100 block of Acushnet Avenue.
Members of the Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit arrived and received permission to search the multi-family home at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Officers located two subjects inside the basement, later identified as Roberto Mercado and Christopher Cruz.
Neither subject lived in the home.
Cruz had two outstanding warrants and both he and Mercado were placed under arrest.
Neither subject has been charged in connection with the shooting.
Roberto Mercado, 21, of Holyoke, is charged with breaking and entering and trespassing.
Christopher Cruz, 24, of Springfield, is charged with breaking and entering, trespassing, assault and battery on a household/family member, assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and malicious damage to a motor vehicle on a warrant from Springfield District Court, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle on a default warrant from Easthampton District Court.
The Springfield Police Detective Bureau is investigating the shooting.
