CATLIN, NY — A woman was arrested Dec. 8 after allegedly attempting to steal money from a convenience store cash register and later trying to escape from custody at the sheriff’s office.

Stephanie M. Kemp, 37, of Montour Falls, was charged with attempted robbery in the third degree, a class E felony, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor, petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor, and attempted escape in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor.

Deputies from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Dandy Mini Mart on Watkins Road around 11:14 a.m. after receiving a report of a woman causing a disturbance inside the store and refusing to leave.

Upon arrival, deputies detained Kemp and contacted the Criminal Investigations Division to assist with the investigation.

Investigators determined that Kemp forced her way behind the employee-only counter, damaged store property, and shoved a clerk before forcibly opening the cash register and attempting to steal money.

After her arrest, Kemp was transported to the sheriff’s office for processing.

While being processed, Kemp slipped her handcuffs and fled toward the building’s exit in an attempt to escape custody before being apprehended again by deputies.

After processing was complete, Kemp was issued appearance tickets to appear in court at a later date and was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center for evaluation.

The New York State Police assisted the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.
