NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A wrong-way driver died early this morning following a head-on collision on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway.
At 4:12 a.m., a Westchester County Police patrol officer traveling southbound observed two vehicles that had just been involved in a head-on collision just south of Webster Avenue.
Patrol officers found the driver of the wrong-way vehicle unresponsive behind the wheel, removed him from his car and began CPR.
New Rochelle Fire Department and Empress EMS personnel also responded and took over care.
The driver, a man in his 30s, was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 5:07 a.m.
Preliminary investigation has determined that the wrong-way vehicle, a Toyota Prius, had entered the parkway at Webster Avenue.
County Police had not received any calls reporting a wrong-way driver or an accident, so it is believed the collision had just occurred when the officer came upon it.
The other vehicle involved was a Cadillac Escalade.
The driver and his two passengers reported minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification to family members.
