Scam targets families of inmates in Penobscot County

1 min read

BANGOR, ME — The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam targeting families of incarcerated individuals.

The scam involves attempts to secure the release of inmates in exchange for payment, according to the sheriff’s office.

The fraudulent scheme resembles previous scams where individuals impersonate local law enforcement to solicit payment for fines or warrants.

No jail official will ever call and request money for the release of an inmate into a program, authorities said.

There are no legitimate programs in place that allow for the release of inmates in return for cash.

Calls or messages requesting payment for fines, fees, bail or release through methods like Venmo, PayPal or gift cards are likely scams, according to the sheriff’s office.
