ROME, NY — A man was taken into custody after allegedly throwing a machete at a police officer and barricading himself inside a residence.
Officers from the Rome Police Department responded to a report of a domestic incident at 306 ½ W. Court Street at approximately 5:45 p.m. Sunday.
Dispatch advised responding units that the male involved in the dispute was reportedly in possession of two machetes.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to speak with Manuel D. Frias, 32, of Rome, who was still armed with a machete in the roadway.
During officers’ attempts to speak with Frias, he threw the machete in the direction of an officer.
A foot pursuit followed, and Frias fled back into 306 ½ W. Court Street, where he barricaded himself inside.
Rome Police negotiators were called in and attempted to speak with Frias, which were unsuccessful.
Detectives from the Rome Police Department responded to assist, and a warrant for Frias’s arrest was obtained.
The Rome Police Department’s Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene where Frias was eventually taken into custody inside the residence without further incident.
Frias has been charged with menacing a police or peace officer, attempted assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree with a previous conviction, all class D felonies.
Frias was processed on the listed charges and transported to the Oneida County Jail, where he is being held pending arraignment.
