Two arrested in abandoned building in Holyoke

HOLYOKE, MA — Two men were arrested Wednesday in an abandoned building, one of whom had an outstanding warrant for armed robbery, according to police.

Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan said members of the Holyoke Police Narcotics Unit and the FBI’s Western Massachusetts Gang Task Force made the arrests while conducting a property check in the alley behind 79 Newton Street.

Detectives were investigating citizen complaints of drug dealing in the area when they observed an open door to an abandoned building, police said.

Two men were found inside the building and placed under arrest.

Edwin Nazario, 43, of Holyoke, was charged with breaking and entering and trespassing.

Melquiades Cabrera, 36, of Springfield, was charged with breaking and entering, trespassing and an arrest warrant for armed and masked robbery and trespassing.

Police attempted to contact the property owner to secure the condemned building.

The Board of Health was also contacted.
