TROY, NY — A parolee opened fire on police officers responding to a domestic violence call Saturday night, striking no one before being shot by officers and hospitalized in critical condition.
Troy Police received a 911 call shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday from a woman reporting she was being chased by an ex-partner at her residence on Ferry Street.
The caller told dispatchers the suspect had held a handgun to her head in a threatening manner.
The suspect fled the residence and walked eastbound on Ferry Street toward 6th Avenue as the victim tracked his movements for dispatchers.
Two patrol officers located the suspect walking on the sidewalk of Ferry Street near 6th Avenue.
As the officers exited their vehicles and began verbal contact, the suspect turned and fired multiple shots at them without provocation, according to police.
Both officers returned fire while seeking cover.
The suspect fled through an apartment building parking area before falling to the ground, dropping his firearm and illegal narcotics.
Additional officers secured the weapon and rendered medical aid before Troy Fire Department personnel transported the suspect to a local hospital.
The two initial responding officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation and were not physically injured.
The female victim was not physically injured.
Police identified the suspect as Michael Rodriguez, 41, of Troy.
Rodriguez is a parolee under supervision by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
He was convicted in 2019 of attempted criminal possession of a weapon after originally facing charges of attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment in a Troy incident.
Rodriguez remains in police custody at the hospital and will face charges.
The Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office will handle prosecution.
New York State Police and various Troy Police specialty units are assisting in the investigation.
