Wrong-way driver killed in crash on Route 104 in Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY — The New York State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred Thursday at approximately 8:18 a.m. on State Route 104 eastbound in the city of Rochester, Monroe County.

Troopers responded to the area of the bridge underpass between Lake Avenue and St. Paul Street for a report of a serious crash involving a wrong-way driver.

The investigation determined that a 2025 Nissan Altima, operated by a 35-year-old female, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of SR 104 when it struck a 2022 Mazda CX-30 operated by Matthew J. Krause, 32, of Rochester.

The 35-year-old female was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries.

She was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Krause suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The scene was processed by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, with assistance from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and uniform members.

The roadway, which had been closed eastbound between Lake Avenue and St. Paul Street, has since been reopened.
