NORWALK, CT — A 25-year-old man was arrested after allegedly ramming a police cruiser and fleeing on foot before officers discovered a stolen handgun in his vehicle.
Yahya Sonko, of Norwalk, was taken into custody at 6:48 p.m. on Nov. 23 after patrol officers responded to 6 Quaker Road to execute an active arrest warrant.
The warrant stemmed from an Oct. 24 incident in which Sonko allegedly engaged officers in a pursuit.
Officers observed Sonko leaving his residence in his vehicle as they arrived.
As officers positioned their patrol cars to prevent him from leaving, Sonko reversed his vehicle into a patrol cruiser, according to police.
He then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Officers pursued Sonko on foot and apprehended him in the parking lot of 330 Connecticut Avenue.
During a search of Sonko’s vehicle, officers recovered a stolen Glock 19 handgun located under the driver’s seat.
The firearm contained a 33-round extended magazine loaded with 28 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Officers also seized narcotics found in the vehicle, including thirteen 30mg oxycodone pills, fifty-nine 10mg oxycodone pills, and one MDMA pill.
Sonko faces on-site charges of stealing a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine, interfering with an officer, evading responsibility, and unsafe backing.
He also faces warrant charges of possession of a controlled substance, failure to keep narcotics in original container, interfering with an officer, engaging police in pursuit, failure to obey stop sign, and failure to carry an insurance card.
Bond was set at $250,000 for the on-site charges and $250,000 for the warrant charges.
Sonko is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 8.
