1 min read

GENESEO, NY — The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement officials.

A resident reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office who said there was a warrant out for their arrest.

The caller told the resident that bond needed to be paid with gift cards from a store.

When the resident called back the scammer’s phone number, automated messages prompted them to choose a number to direct their call to “Investigations.”

The phone number used during the incident is no longer active.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will never ask residents to use gift cards as a form of payment.

Officials are advising anyone who receives a suspicious call to hang up and contact the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office directly at (585) 243-7100.
