PENN YAN, NY — A Nevada man was arrested on drunken driving charges following a traffic stop in the village.

Keith D. Newell, 57, of Pahrump, Nevada, was observed operating a motor vehicle on Main Street without his lights on, according to Penn Yan police.

Newell then swerved into oncoming traffic and almost struck a Penn Yan Police Department vehicle, police said.

A traffic stop was initiated and contact was made with Newell, who showed several signs of intoxication, police said.

Newell was placed through standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed, according to police.

Newell was taken into custody and transported to the Yates County Jail, where he refused to submit to a chemical test, police said.

Newell was charged with driving while intoxicated, no/inadequate lights, failure to keep right and moved from lane unsafely.

Newell was processed at the police department and later transported to the Yates County Jail to await centralized arraignment.
