Man arrested in shooting at Southeast taxi

SOUTHEAST, NY — A Kent man has been arrested following a shooting at a taxi in the Towne Centre Plaza early Saturday morning.

Luis A. Galvez, 37, of Kent, was charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses after allegedly firing a gun into a taxi during a dispute over a fare, according to Putnam County Sheriff Brian Hess.

Deputies responded to the plaza at approximately 5:25 a.m. on Nov. 23 for a report of a shooting.

The victim, a taxi driver, told deputies the suspect had discharged a firearm into the passenger compartment of his taxi following the fare dispute.

Deputies observed a bullet hole in the vehicle and located a bullet inside the rear seating area.

Investigators and the Crime Scene Unit processed the scene and recovered a .45 caliber shell casing.

Surveillance video from nearby businesses showed the suspect approaching the taxi and discharging a firearm at the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators secured a search warrant for Galvez’s residence, vehicle and person.

The warrant was executed and Galvez was taken into custody without incident.

A .45 caliber pistol was recovered during the search.

Galvez confessed to the incident during an interview with investigators, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was charged with attempted murder in the second degree, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

Galvez was arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $150,000 cash or $300,000 bond.
