LOCKE, NY — A 62-year-old man was arrested following a multiple-hour standoff with law enforcement that ended when he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Monday morning.

Michael Yaw, of Locke, was taken into custody at approximately 3:20 a.m. after surrendering to authorities at a residence on Pierce Road.

Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that deputies were dispatched to the residence at approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday for a welfare check after receiving reports that a subject at the residence was potentially in danger.

Patrol deputies discovered that Yaw was at the residence in violation of a duly served order of protection.

When deputies attempted to make contact with Yaw, he met them armed with a long gun and then barricaded himself inside the residence.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office Negotiations Unit and Tactical Response Unit were activated.

A third party was discovered inside the residence unable to leave.

The New York State Police Special Operation Response Team and negotiations unit were requested for additional mutual aid and responded to the scene.

Members of the Cayuga County Criminal Investigations Division secured a warrant of arrest for Yaw for violating the order of protection.

After multiple hours of negotiations, the standoff ended when Yaw suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his shoulder and surrendered.

Yaw was transported to Upstate University Hospital where he is being treated for what appears to be a non-life threatening injury.

He is under the custody of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and is pending arrest processing and arraignment following medical treatment.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police E Troop and C Troop, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, the NYSP negotiations unit and SORT Team, Four Town Ambulance, Groton Ambulance, Southern Cayuga Ambulance, Cayuga County Office of Emergency Services, Cayuga County 911 and the Locke Fire Department.
