HAVERSTRAW, NY — Police arrested a Haverstraw man Thursday night after recovering a large quantity of stolen property linked to a series of larcenies from unlocked vehicles in the Village of Haverstraw.
According to the Haverstraw Police Department, investigators identified Wellington Remigio, 37, as a suspect in the pattern of thefts and began canvassing the area to locate him.
At about 10:00 p.m. on Nov. 20, plainclothes officers observed Remigio walking on a public roadway within the village.
Police coordinated with Haverstraw Police Department UAV drone operators, who monitored the suspect from above in hopes he would lead investigators to the stolen property.
Remigio was seen entering a vacant building in the Village of Haverstraw.
Officers responded to the location and safely apprehended Remigio.
After obtaining legal authorization to search the building, police recovered a large quantity of stolen property connected to previously reported larcenies.
Remigio, of Haverstraw, was transported to the Haverstraw Police Department for processing and interview.
He has been charged with forgery in the second degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, and 16 counts of criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow as more property is identified.
The Haverstraw Police Department is urging residents to lock their vehicles and report suspicious activity.
