Scam calls impersonating law enforcement reported in Columbia County

1 min read

HUDSON, NY — The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent phone scam in which callers pose as law enforcement officers.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scam involves an individual falsely claiming to be a member of the department and telling victims they have missed jury duty.

The caller threatens that a warrant will be issued unless immediate action is taken.
Officials said these calls are fraudulent.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that no member of its staff will call the public to demand payment, threaten arrest over missed jury duty, or request personal or financial information by phone.

Authorities warned that scammers often use urgency, fear, and official-sounding titles to pressure victims into providing sensitive information or making payments.

Residents are urged not to provide any personal information—including date of birth, Social Security number, or bank account details—or make any payments if contacted.

Officials advise anyone who receives a suspicious call to hang up immediately and verify the contact by calling the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office directly.

Anyone who has received a call like this or has concerns is encouraged to contact the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at 518-828-3344.
